The idea of having some kind of groundbreaking idea that changes the way that people work and play is something that is hugely appealing to many of us. And now, thanks to many new modern technologies, it is more possible than ever before for this to happen for us. You don’t need a big team and you don’t need to work with manufacturing companies — you can have a great idea, create it online and then distribute it around the world!

But what is it actually like? Does the reality live up to the dream? And is this something you should really be aiming for?

The Reality of Success

This is something that I have a little experience in. I haven’t changed the world or become insanely rich, but I did have an app that made me over $40,000 in the first year. And for a while, it changed everything for me at least.

The best part of the whole experience was having that initial ‘eureka moment’. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing — I was talking to a friend and explaining an app I was working on and it was the experience of telling him about it that showed me how it could be made better. And that was the moment the idea was born!

I vividly remember the moment that the app started to take off too. You could sign in to Google and see in real-time how many sales you were getting on Android and I was at a house party when I realized that they were really taking off.

It was no fun at that party because I kept checking my phone!

It wasn’t all great though. Because along with the sheer excitement I actually had a huge amount of anxiety. I was finally seeing one of my dreams become a reality in front of my eyes. I’d made it. But what if it stopped? What if the app was taken down? Or what if it just went out of fashion?

It was a wild ride but I can tell you that for me — it eventually did come to an end after a few years. It still makes me a hundred to two hundred dollars a month but the sales are nothing like they used to be.

I still look back on that as being one of the most exciting times in my life though. And one of the things that I am most proud of!
